About CharterTeacher.com

Welcome to CharterTeacher.com, a website designed specifically for charter school teachers and operators.  Our goal is to help charter schools achieve success by creating the best possible learning environment for their students.  Teachers have the greatest impact on student achievement and there are an estimated 95,000 teachers working in charter schools today.

CharterTeacher.com was created by the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) to be a new resource for charter schools, teachers, and administrators.  ABCTE is a non-profit organization, founded in 2001 via a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

ABCTE was created to attract more mid career professionals into teaching by offering an innovative, online teaching certification program designed for new teachers. The program offers a flexible and affordable route to the classroom, with the average candidate taking 8 to 10 months to complete the program and most ABCTE certifications costing $975. The program is currently accepted by nine states for their public schools: Florida, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Utah.

To date, nearly 8,000 people--with an average age of 39 and over 33% male--have enrolled in the program and more than 1,900 certifications have been issued. Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree, pass a background check and pass two rigorous and comprehensive exams: one on Professional Teaching Knowledge (PTK) and one in their subject matter, followed by additional state requirements during the first few years in the classroom.
