Professional Development and Mentoring for Charter School Teachers | CharterTeacher.com

Professional Development for Teachers

Only 40% of public charter school teachers report receiving professional development.  An investment by in your staff will pay off with greater job satisfaction, better performance and increased student achievement.  But providing professional development can be expensive and difficult to fit into already busy schedules.

Purchasing ABCTE professional development for your school opens our entire library of online materials to all your teachers through the end of the school year. Because the cost of developing these materials was offset by a U.S. Department of Education grant, an ABCTE professional development site license can be purchased for $350. This license gives any teacher in your school access to the over 1,200 hours of content, 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the end of the school year.

Mentoring

New teachers need a solid structure of feedback and support throughout their first year in the classroom. The ABCTE Teacher Residency Program provides one-to-one peer support and review through a system of focused classroom observations, structured feedback sessions, professional development plans, and video resources. New teachers will be guided through this process by a local ABCTE-trained mentor who will help them improve their effectiveness in the classroom and adjust to the culture and expectations of their school.

The Teacher Residency Program includes:

  • Four (4) online training modules for mentors and new teachers
  • At least six (6) observations, each followed by discussion and feedback
  • Professional development plans that target areas for improvement and growth as the teacher progresses through the program
  • Continuous support from an experienced teacher
  • Access to a video library of teaching practices and scenarios
  • Guidelines for selecting a mentor

Mentors will help new teachers improve their teaching practice and professional performance based on the following indicators of successful teaching:

  • Instructional organization
  • Lesson planning
  • Content mastery
  • Classroom management
  • Instructional delivery
  • Positive learning environment
  • Classroom assessment
  • Professionalism and adherence to school policy
  • Expectations outside of the classroom
